Red-headed Woodpeckers are rare but yearly in Lycoming County. In 2016, they were confirmed nesting near Slate Run. There could possibly be others nesting in the county, but any such locations are not known by the birding community. The much more common Red-bellied Woodpecker is sometimes misidentified as a Red-headed Woodpecker by less-experienced observers due to the large amount of red on their heads (especially the males).
