American Coot
American Coot is a common overwintering species from October through May. They are found in a variety of water habitats, including Rose Valley Lake, the river, marshy areas, and ponds. This species is often mistaken as a duck, but as a member of the rail family, they are actually not closely related to ducks. While appearing somewhat ducklike in the water, they appear much more chickenlike when seen on land.
