Lycoming County Summer 2021 Summary
A total of 142 species were reported in Lycoming County during the summer.
Observations

Waterfowl
A male Bufflehead was still at the Williamsport Dam on 6/2 (DB, JD) and a group of 5 was still at Rose Valley Lake as late as 6/10 (BB, DeB, BoB). A group of 19 Ruddy Ducks were at Rose Valley Lake on 6/3 (BB, DB), and 2 of them were still there on 6/5 (BB).
Grebes
A Pied-billed Grebe was at SGL 252 on 6/6 (BB, DB, RB, AK), and the species likely nested there. Two of them were also at Rose Valley Lake on 7/21 (BB).
Cranes and Rails
An American Coot was at Rose Valley Lake on 7/1 (BB). The species is pretty rare in Lycoming County during summer, and it's interesting that a summer record would occur in a year with only a single spring season report.
Shorebirds
Two Least Sandpipers were at Mill St. on 7/28 (BB).
Gulls
An immature Herring Gull was at the Williamsport Dam on 7/18 (BB).
Loons
A Common Loon was seen at the Williamsport Dam up through 6/9 (BB, DB, RB).
Herons
Great Egrets started to turn up along the river during mid-July. A juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron was reported at a small pond in Hughesville on 7/17 (GM).
Woodpeckers
A Red-headed Woodpecker was seen near Clarkstown on 7/23 (JH).
Falcons
Three of the young from the Peregrine Falcon nest on the Market St. Bridge in Williamsport appeared to survive the somewhat dangerous post-fledging conditions at that location.
Flycatchers
Two Alder Flycatchers were at SGL 252 on 6/6 (BB, DB, RB, AK), one was at Rose Valley Lake on 6/10 (BB, DeB, BoB), and one was singing at the Robert Porter Allen Natural Area on 7/18 (BB).
Vireos
A White-eyed Vireo continued on private land near Williamsport as late as 6/7 (DF). A Yellow-throated Vireo was at SGL 252 on 6/6 (BB, DB, RB, AK).
Larks
A Horned Lark was seen in Cogan House Twp. on 7/11 (BB, DeB, BoB, RB).
Finches
There were 2 Purple Finches at Rose Valley Lake on both 7/8 and 7/20 (BB).
Sparrows
A Vesper Sparrow was seen near Elimsport on 7/17 (BB, DeB, BoB, RB), which is the first known July report of that species in Lycoming County.
