State Game Lands 252

Overview

State Game Lands 252 is located in southern Lycoming County and northern Union County in the area of the former village of Alvira which was taken over by the United States government in World War II for a TNT factory and munitions storage. Many of the concrete bunkers remain as eerie concrete igloos. The area is nicknamed "The Ordnance."

SGL 252 has a great mix of habitat including fields, forested area, and many ponds. Some areas are closed as propagation areas during spring and early summer.

This is a very popular SGL so be respectful to hunters. We recommend always wearing some orange and avoiding the area completely during prime hunting times. The boundary of the game lands borders the Allenwood Federal Prison, so do not cross any fences.

Parking is available at numerous gravel lots off of Ridge Rd at the north end of the game lands and at the eastern end of Pikes Peak Rd which comes off of Alvira Rd. There is also a gravel pull off along Alvira Rd right at the county line.

There are many roads, paths, and trails throughout SGL 252 and it is very easy to get lost if you are not familiar with the area. If in doubt, head west.

Directions

From Route 15 near Allenwood, head west on PA54. In two miles, when the road makes a sharp right across a bridge, take the road to the left and continue to Ridge Road. Park in one of the lots along Ridge Road or continue to the end and turn left onto Alvira Road.
