Best Hummingbird Feeder to Keep Clean

One of the biggest hassles of feeding hummingbirds is keeping the feeder clean. During hot weather, you need to clean the feeder at least every other day to keep your hummers healthy. Many feeder designs do not encourage good cleaning practices, because it can be hard to get into all of the spaces that need cleaned.

My favorite hummingbird feeder is the 12 oz. Aspects 367 Hummzinger Ultra Hummingbird Feeder. I've completely switched to using these feeders over the normal style feeders with the reservoir above the ports. My parents have quite a few of the other style feeders too and have also completely switched due to the benefits of the Hummzinger feeder. Not only are they much easier to clean because of how they come apart, but they also keep bees and ants out of the nectar, and it's really hard for the feeder to leak at all. Bees can't get to the nectar because it sits down in slightly below the ports, but the hummingbirds can still easily feed. A built-in ant moat keeps ants out using a small amount of plain water, and sometimes you'll see chickadees and other small birds getting a drink from the water.

So, if you're frustrated with your current feeder, it might be worth a try. There are some cheaper similar "saucer style" feeders that you could also try if you are on a tighter budget, but I've been very happy with the quality of the Hummzinger, and I've never broken one.

And just as another reminder, instead of expensive commercial mixes, just use a mixture of four parts water to one part table sugar — with no red food coloring or other additives (which could potentially harm the birds). The birds will find the feeder fine even with clear liquid.
